When an important philosopher takes pains to bid farewell to a defining undertaking of humanity, as Immanuel Kant did with metaphysics, Karl Marx did with faith, Martin Heidegger did with philosophy, and Gianni Vattimo has performed with fact, it's always to not do away with it yet to reopen it and discover its promise. this can be the reality of this provocative book.

In the epoch of the end of metaphysics we can no longer search, as Heidegger did, for the event of Being in those privileged moments on which he himself always concentrated: the great poetic works, “inaugural” words like the saying of Anaximander or the poem of Parmenides or the lines of Hölderlin. These texts continue to function as essences, Platonic ideas recognized only by philosophers, who sometimes make them into “sovereign” voices. In the age of democracy, the event of Being to which thought must turn its attention is something much broader, perhaps, and less well defined, something more like politics.
Truth faces a challenge in the world of postmodern pluralism—the challenge of coming to grips with the fact that consensus on individual questions is above all a problem of collective interpretation, of constructing paradigms shared or, at any rate, explicitly recognized. The parabola of the notion of truth in the twentieth century reveals a transition from truth to charity—a topic on which I shall expand. What Thomas Kuhn (1962) called paradigms are beliefs shared (ones tested by time, of course, and by experience gained within the framework they authorize) by entire societies or smaller communities, like those of physicists or theologians.
The truth of single descriptive propositions depends on a more primordial truth, for which he chooses the term “opening” or “aperture” and by which he means that ensemble of presuppositions (and prejudices, of course) upon which depends any possibility of establishing correspondences between statements and things. I have already mentioned that the reason Heidegger, and with him a large part of existentialist thought in the twentieth century, especially the philosophical current today labeled hermeneutics, rejected and rejects the idea of truth as objectivity is ethicopolitical:2 if true Being were only that which is objective, quantifiable, and given once and for all like the Platonic Ideas (to simplify Platonism drastically), our existence as free subjects would have no meaning; we could not say of ourselves that “we are,” and on top of that, we would be exposed to the risk of totalitarianism.
