Mineralogical-sedimentological and geochemical investigations together with pollen info of a 12.7-m-long dated sediment middle from Lake Silvana, SE Brazil, enable the reconstruction of the climatic historical past over the last 10,000 years. The lowermost part (I) displays a rough paleosol-type sediment with plentiful plant particles and rootlets; pollen exhibits grassland plants. part II represents fine-grained lake sediments; pollen shows a savanna-like crops. part III represents a pollen-free, coarse-grained allogenic sediment deposited lower than excessive transportation strength (increased precipitation). part IV, a greenish series with expanding C content material in the direction of the pinnacle, has a pollen spectrum of present-day crops (semideciduous forest). the several sediment sections express a reference to erosional stages within the catchment of the lake, in accordance with mineralogy and geochemistry, that are a reaction to weather improvement.

About 140 different pollen and spore taxa were identified. For identification, Behling's own reference collection and the following pollen morphological studies were used: Behling (t993), Roubik and Moreno (1991) and Salgado- Labouriau (1973). Pollen taxa have been classified to the ecological groups: herbs, cerrado trees, other tropical shrubs and trees, aquatics, and ferns. For calculations and cluster analysis of the palynological data, the CONISS software was used (Grimm, 1987). The summary pollen diagram includes records of ecological groups, the total pollen sum and a cluster analysis dendrogram (Appendices A9, A10).

This mineralogical assemblage seems characteristic of the most advanced weathering stage in tropical regions. The predominance of goethite is commonly associated with beige soils (Curi and Franzmeier, 1984; Irion, 1984). Gibbsite, however, may occur either in red ferralitic soils (Curi and Franzmeier, 1984) or in beige soils (Irion, 1984). 1 Sampling One sediment core and two soil profiles were collected in Lake Sitvana and its catchment. 7 m long and was collected using a piston corer capable to reach great depths with excellent recovery rates.
