But I didn’t contact her. Instead, I started a knitting circle at the local gay bar that was just blocks from my house. I advertised it on Craigslist, and I walked to the first afternoon session surprisingly nervous. What if no one came and I ended up knitting alone? What if, and this was worse, only one person came, and I had to make polite chitchat for the next two hours with someone who liked to crochet tiny pineapples? I was thrilled when fifteen women showed up. This was back when knitting in public was something people didn’t see very often.
