Written by a committee of historians authorized in 1985 by the President of Rutgers, this book reexamines the case of dismissal in 1935 of a New Jersey College for Women (Rutgers) instructor of German with strong anti-Nazi views. Lienhard Bergel was dismissed, he claimed, because Friedrich J. Hauptmann, the Chair of the German Department, was a Nazi official who required that his professors distribute f 40 Academic Freedom Nazi literature in class.
