Despite his alienation from the city’s upper class, Bartholomew was a leader in race matters, participating in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Urban League. He was married to Ruth Segue, with whom he had two daughters and one son. He died of a stroke on October 12, 1971. In 1972, he became the first black man to be named to the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame, and in 1979, the Joseph M. Bartholomew Golf Course in New Orleans was named in his honor.

S. government was looking for a new building to house its military recruiting station in Lorain, he offered to find the property—and then used the promise of a big tenant to secure financing to buy a suitable building. Barden invested $25,000 of his own savings in the deal—and then sold the building two years later for $50,000. For a time, Barden and a colleague tried to start a newspaper, an enterprise that failed in 1967 but that led to his more successful founding of the Lorain County Times, which he ran for five years, writing the stories, selling the ads, and delivering the paper to subscribers.

Finally, in 1894 and 1895, he published his own pamphlets for use in black Sunday schools, and in 1895, he argued at the National Baptist Convention—the convention of black Baptist churches—that black Baptists needed their own religious materials. Although the group was reluctant to offend northern white Baptists, Boyd would not give up, and in 1896 he established the National Baptist Publishing Board in Nashville. Boyd faced several difficulties as an AfricanAmerican businessman in the South, which at that time set up many barriers for black people.
